Mental illness affects different people in different ways. I am one of those types of people. I have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and bipolar disorder. The disorder is a very serious one, and I have had several of my clients get in touch with me because of the effects it has had on their lives.
I work with people from all walks of life. Some of the most significant mental health issues that I deal with are depression, anxiety, and psychosis. I see a lot of people who have tried to kill themselves recently. These people have found themselves on Deathloop because of something they’ve done that they could not take back. It’s not just about killing yourself. It’s about being so unhappy that you can’t even remember why you started the journey in the first place.
As the trailer states, there is no real cure or cure for depression, anxiety, or psychosis, but there are a few things that you can do to help yourself: 1) Take care of yourself. 2) Take care of your family and friends. 3) Talk to people. 4) Talk to people who know you. 5) Talk to people who know the person you are. 6) Seek help from friends and family.
I’m happy to report that there was a lot of love and support for mental health awareness from our friends and family. They all supported this by taking a pledge to speak out about mental health issues when they see them. I was especially proud to see one of my friends, Michaela, take up the cause and commit to speaking out about depression, anxiety, and psychosis.
A friend of mine put it best by saying, “It’s not about what you have to say, it’s what you can do about it. If you speak up, they’ll listen.” I can completely agree with that sentiment and I wish that we could all be as proactive as Michaela is.
As I mentioned in an earlier article, family and friends make a world of difference in the lives of people with mental health issues. But I was also pleased to see that these friends are also taking advantage of the new “Proud to Be a Mental Health Advocate” campaign. Launched earlier in 2016, the campaign promotes mental health awareness and supports people to come out to their friends and family to share their own stories of mental health issues.
The Proud to Be a Mental Health Advocate campaign is a great example of how family and friends can be helpful in providing support and even help with medical bills as well. I think that mental health awareness is pretty important and worth supporting. In fact, the national Mental Health Awareness Week is on the heels of Proud to be a Mental Health Advocate, and I expect it to make a big positive difference.
Mental health awareness in America is important because we do have some serious issues in the mental health community. I’m talking about both the public mental health problems and those that are private. The problems that are most private in my opinion are ones that affect a small percentage of the population, although there are a few that are public. The biggest problem is when there is no treatment available and there seems to be a serious lack of understanding in society.
The biggest problem I see in the mental health community is that no one actually cares. When we see that someone has a breakdown, we put them in a nice warm home and send them to a psychiatrist who gives them pills and tells them to forget about it. It is as if no one has ever thought to ask if this person has a mental disorder. You can have a mental disorder and still be alive, but you do not have a mental disorder and you could be dead.
I really think there needs to be a lot more concern about mental health. I believe that the mental health system in this country is terrible. I’ve been to a few psychiatrists and the ones I talk to are really good but there is a problem: they don’t seem to know about the existence of mental disorders.
